- REVELATION 3:15-16…….JESUS SAID, “I KNOW YOUR WORKS; YOU ARE NEITHER COLD NOR HOT. I WISH THAT YOU WERE EITHER COLD OR HOT. SO, BECAUSE YOU ARE LUKEWARM, AND NEITHER COLD NOR HOT, I AM ABOUT TO SPIT YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH.” –
Spit you out. Vomit you out. Spew you out.
This spewing out is not a message of hope. It is a message of judgment. Jesus is warning those who are lukewarm that he’ll spit us far from his presence as far and as we would spit sour warm milk .
This is one of Jesus’ seven letters to the seven Asian churches to whom the book is
addressed. This letter is to the church in Laodicea.
- And Jesus talks temperature here. He says there are three spiritual
temperatures: hot, cold, and lukewarm. Two of those are the right temperature.
One of those is the wrong temperature. And Jesus tells us which
is which in this brief letter. Hear the word of the Lord … (read the text).
Revelation 3:14-22 (NKJV) “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’-and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked- 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘”
B. WHO IS A LUKEWARM CHRISTIAN?
-Christianity without conviction.
-Christianity without passion or zeal for God. Lukewarm Christians refer to believers who are no longer fervent in the Lord thus exhibit wordly traits. It could also mean people who are indifference and half-hearted about their faith (1Cor.3:3).
C. STAGES OF LUKEWARMNESS
- Incomplete conversion experience-not having genuine or sufficient encounter with God that is capable of transforming his life.
- Sudden drop or loss of fire- loss of spiritual heat. Their slogan is usually “when I used to”…… “Gone at the days”
D. CHARACTERISTICS OF A LUKEWARM PERSON
1 The lukewarm are fence-seaters—they want a little bit of Jesus and a
lot of the world. When they have to choose, they choose the world almost every time. (Mt. 16:26)
-
- Inconsistent reading/studying of the Bible and dwindling fasting/prayer life (Jn. 5:39; Jas 5:16b).
- Not making any provision for spiritual fellowship with the brethren (Heb. 10:25).
- Not creating time for meditating regularly on the word of God (Josh. 1:8).
- Conforming to the standard of the world (1Jn. 2:15-16; Rom, 12:2).
- Shifting focus from Jesus to celebrities (Heb. 12:2).
- Listening to or singing music that corrupts the mind (Eph. 5:19).
- Not being remorseful for wrong deeds (Gal 5:19-21).
- Feeling embarrassed or ashamed to witness the Gospel of Christ (Rom. 1:16; Matt. 10:33).
- Having a belief system contrary to the Scriptures (Heb. 11:6)
- Full of religious activities, but no real relationship with Jesus (2Tim. 3:5).
- Spiritual Self-Sufficiency Spiritual Self-Sufficiency: v. 17a Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’– is when we think we are making it on our own, and don’t need the Lord’s power, guidance, and presence.
- The lukewarm give Jesus a part of their time and money and talents and thoughts but do not give Him control over the entirety of their lives.
E. HOW DO I GET OUT OF LUKEWORMNESS POSITION?
I. Be zealous” (3:19). . Be serious. In other words, take your condition seriously. Cut the lackadaisical attitude toward spiritual things. Take His word seriously. Take your faith seriously. Take obedience seriously. “Be zealous.”
Ii. Repent” (3:19). Own the fact that you are lukewarm. Confess this
to Jesus. Then, turn from it. Behold,”
says Jesus. “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Rev. 3:20). And then, invite Jesus to His rightful place in your life. “
Get the temperature right. Be hot or be cold, but stop being lukewarm.
And then, invite Jesus to His rightful place in your life. “
F. CONCLUSION:
lukewarmness is the wrong temperature for a Christian. Be passionately hot.
Be refreshingly cold. But don’t be lukewarm. Lukewarm makes Jesus sick. It makes Him want to vomit you right out of His mouth.
What’s your temperature today?
• Are you hot? Is your faith in Christ inspiring anybody, warming
anybody, stirring anybody?
• Are you cold? Is your faith refreshing anybody, encouraging anybody,
uplifting anybody?
